Slovenian wine history dates back over 2,000 years, with its roots in ancient Roman times when the region was part of the Roman Empire. The Romans brought viticulture to the area, and evidence of early wine production has been found in regions like the Lower Styrian and the Vipava Valley.

During the Middle Ages, wine cultivation flourished under the influence of monasteries, particularly those of the Benedictine and Cistercian orders, who played a key role in advancing viticulture. The tradition of winemaking continued to evolve in Slovenia, with the wine culture becoming more refined during the Habsburg period (16th to 18th centuries). This era saw the establishment of vineyards and a more organized approach to wine production.

The 20th century brought challenges for Slovenian wine, with the country being part of Yugoslavia, which imposed centralization and limited the development of regional wine identities. However, after Slovenia gained independence in 1991, the wine industry began to thrive again. A focus on quality rather than quantity led to a renaissance, with an emphasis on indigenous grape varieties, organic viticulture, and boutique wineries.

Today, Slovenia is known for its distinct wine regions—like Podravje, Posavje, and Primorska—producing a variety of wines, including whites like Laski Riesling and reds like Rebula and Pinot Noir. Slovenian wines have gained international recognition for their quality and craftsmanship.
